Each end of the rod will sit the bracket about 1/2". This will leave 1/4" of space between the runner or tapestry and the bracket. If the rod you desire is not the exact then length you need, we can custom cut your order for you or you can cut the rods youself with a metal cutting hack saw typically available for purchase at any local hardware store.
