Gil Hodges's squad scored the National League's eighth straight victory in All-Star play in 1970 by defeating the American League 5-4 in the 12th inning on successive singles by Pete Rose, Bill Grabarkewitz and Jim Hickman.

After Tom Seaver and Jim Palmer hurled 3 scoreless innings apiece and Sam McDowell and Jim Merritt added 2 more. Ray Fosse singled in the 6th off Gaylord Perry. McDowell sacrificed him to second and Carl Yastrzemski blooped a single to right center to put the AL ahead 1-0.

In the bottom of the 6th the NL threatened when Richie Allen and Pete Rose both waked on 3-2 pitches, but Sam McDowell got Tony Perez and Jim Hickman to fly out and them struck out Johnny Bench on 3 off-speed pitches.

In the 7th Brooks Robinson singled up the middle, made his way to second on a sacrifice before Ray Fosse drove him in for a 2-0 lead.

But in the bottom of the 9th Dick Dietz homered off Catfish Hunter to make it 4-2. Then Harrelson and Joe Morgan singled. Fritz Peterson came in to pitch to Willie McCovey who singles in Harrelson. Earl Weaver then brought in Mel Stottlemyre to pitch to Roberto Clemente who lined a sacrifice fly to center to drive in the tying run.

The tie-breaking run came in the 12th when Amos Otis tried to catch Pete Rose at the plate after Hickman singled off Clyde Wright. Rose flipped a somersault over Ray Fosse, bruising the catcher's left shoulder and banging up his own thigh. Rose scored, however, and the NL won 5-4.

A notable oddity of this All-Star game was Rico Carty's selection by the fans across the nation as the NL's starting left fielder. Despite a batting average of over .400 Carty's name was not selected for nomination to the All-Star team, but half a million alert fans wrote his name in to elect him (Acocella, 112-113).
